Maarten is an assistant professor of Contemporary History at the University of Groningen and advisor regional history at Erfgoed in Groningen, a cultural heritage agency. His work focuses on the countryside, from the United States South to the Dutch North. He wrote a book about Mississippi planter-politician James Eastland and political transformation in the U.S. South after World War II. His articles appeared in Southern Cultures, The Southern Quarterly, the International Journal for History, Culture and Modernity, and The Global South. His research project “Race Land: The Ecology of Segregation” received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program. He is currently studying regional identity in rural music cultures and the environmental and social impact of extractive practices (such as peat cutting and oil and gas drilling) in the nineteenth and twentieth-century Dutch North: the ENON project.

Maarten is universitair docent Eigentijdse Geschiedenis en onderzoeker Nedersaksische Taal & Cultuur aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en adviseur regionale geschiedenis bij Erfgoed in Groningen. Zijn werk richt zich op plattelandsculturen, van het Zuiden van de Verenigde Staten tot het Noorden van Nederland. Hij schreef voor Engelstalige tijdschriften zoals Southern Cultures, The Southern Quarterly en The Global South. Zijn Nederlandstalige artikelen verschenen onder meer in Historica: Tijdschrift voor Gendergeschiedenis en de Nederlandse Boekengids. Tijdens de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen van 2020 was hij lid van het Amerika-panel voor de Volkskrant. Hij bracht veel tijd door in de VS, vooral in zuidelijke staten zoals North Carolina, Louisiana en Mississippi. Momenteel is hij bezig met het ENON-project: Entangled Narratives of the North. Dit project bestudeert de ontginningsgeschiedenis van Noord-Nederland, de landschappen die daardoor zijn ontstaan en de regionale identiteiten die schrijvers en muzikanten daaraan verbinden. Hij groeide op in het Drentse veendorp Hollandscheveld en woont nu in Groningen.
